Chapter 6: Prices Paid at Home and Away
-
Data collected on prices paid both at home and away reflects that travelers of various nationalities continue to spend more when abroad than within their own countries, with some exceptions. Swiss travelers spent the most at home, an average of $219 per night, which is easy to understand considering 3-star hotels in Geneva and Zurich average $199 and $206, respectively. The more prevalent trend is that travelers are spending more abroad, likely opting for more luxurious hotels than when traveling domestically.
Japanese travelers continue to be the top “away” spenders, paying an average of $185 per room when they head overseas, and Mexican travelers still spend the least when outside their own borders, parting with just $114 per night.
Travelers from the U.S. are much thriftier hotel bookers at home, spending $120 when traveling domestically. Indian travelers continue to be the lowest domestic spenders, and it’s easy to see why when a 3-star hotel in New Delhi averages just $78 per night.
