Chapter 4: American Travel Habits
Topping off the list once again as Americans’ favorite domestic travel destination is the illustrious Las Vegas. With brand new, unique attractions, such as Vegas StrEATS, Mob Museum, the Chuck Jones Experience, and Fremont Street Flightlinez, it is no wonder that Vegas continues to steal the coveted first place spot year after year. Also voted as having the country’s best taxi drivers, Sin City saw hotel prices drop 1% over the year, which brought rates down to a low $85. New York City and Orlando followed closely, keeping the top three cities unchanged from last year.
Fourth on the list this year is San Diego, which has steadily risen since its spot in sixth place in 2010, beating out Chicago. Even with its budding popularity, San Diego still remains the more affordable of the two, with room rates at just $135 compared to $158 in the Windy City, host to the Ryder Cup September 2012.
Los Angeles also swapped places with San Francisco, taking sixth place with San Francisco at seventh. Home to the The Getty Center and Griffith Observatory, the top one and two attractions in L.A., the city saw its hotel prices rise a small 5%. Room rates in San Francisco also increased a surprising 15%, reflecting its burgeoning popularity.
Rounding out the Top 10 Domestic Travel Destinations for the first half of 2012 were Washington D.C., Houston and San Antonio.
