Most Expensive Global Cities:
Treating Yourself to the Lap of Luxury, If You Have a Bottomless Bank Account

Extravagant American jetsetters aspiring to treat themselves to the “good life” choose to do so in a variety of exotic cities on islands peppered throughout the South Pacific and Caribbean. From Monte Carlo, Monaco to Vieques, Puerto Rico, the top ten most expensive destinations’ daily rates rose, on average, 22% year-over year. Each city on the list cost American travelers more than $350 dollars a night. In fact, the city that topped the list, Bora Bora (located in the French Polynesian islands), costs more than double that amount, deducting just over $800 a night from the travel funds of American vacationers.

In addition to basking on the beaches of Bermuda (three Bermudian cities appear in the top 10 for 2011), Americans visited a number of traditionally ritzy locales, such as Switzerland and the U.K., paying anywhere from 13 to 18% more in the first half of 2011 than the first half of 2010. Brazil and Singapore also continue to be top target destinations for high rollers with price increases above 15%, while Russia makes a strong entrance into the top five most expensive countries for American visitors, taking the number two spot with a national average of nearly $227 per night.
