U.S. travelers are the biggest spenders when they travel abroad.  They spend an average of $160 when they head overseas.  Travelers from the U.S. are followed by those from Russia and Japan, who respectively spend $159 and $155 per night on hotels overseas.

At the other end of the spectrum, travelers from South Africa are those who spend the least when outside their own borders, parting with just $87 per night for hotel rooms.

Travelers from the U.S. are savvier when they are traveling within their own country.  They spend just $114 when traveling domestically.  The biggest domestic spenders are from Singapore, who spend on average, $181 in their own hotels.

Travelers from India are those with the best eye for value within their own borders, spending $91 when in a domestic destination.
